Arthur George

Sir Arthur Thomas George (born January 17, 1917 in Sydney as Athanasios Theodore Tzortzatos , † September 4, 2013 ) was an Australian lawyer . He chaired the Football Federation Australia and the Oceania Football Confederation for several years and was a member of the FIFA Executive Committee.

Career

George comes from the Greek commune in Australia. Between 1969 and 1988 he was President of the Australian Football Association. Under his leadership, the Australian national team qualified for a World Cup finals for the first time when they took part in the 1974 World Cup . In addition, the first national championship was launched in 1977 with the National Soccer League . From 1978 George sat on the FIFA Executive Committee as the first Australian, he was also temporarily President of the Oceania Football Confederation.

In June 1972, George was knighted as a Knight Bachelor . In 1994 he received the FIFA Order of Merit .
