Arthur Leist (1898)

Arthur Leist (born July 8, 1852 in Breslau , † March 22, 1927 in Tbilisi ) was a German writer and journalist. He lived in Georgia , translated classic Georgian and Armenian literature, published Transcaucasian studies and was editor-in-chief of the weekly newspaper Caucasian Post .

Life

He attended high school. After graduating from high school, he worked as a journalist. He took historical lectures at the University of Breslau . During the Russo-Ottoman War in 1877 and 1878 he began to be interested in Georgia. In 1884 he traveled to the country for the first time, and a second time in 1885. After his third trip to Georgia in 1892, he stayed there forever.

Leist spoke German, Georgian, Armenian and Russian. He devoted himself to the translation of classical Georgian and Armenian literature into German, wrote works on Georgian history, ethnography and culture . In 1887 he published the first anthology of Georgian poetry in Germany, and in 1889, with the help of Ilia Tschawtschawadze, the first complete edition of the Georgian national epic The Warrior in a Tiger Skin in Western Europe .

For decades he reported for German newspapers and magazines from the Caucasus. From 1906 to 1922 he was editor-in-chief of the German-language weekly newspaper Caucasian Post, which was published by Kurt von Kutschenbach in Tbilisi . He gave lectures on the German language at the State University of Tbilisi .

Leist was buried on March 26, 1927 in the Didube-Pantheon cemetery in Tbilisi.
