Arthur Lonergan

Arthur Lonergan (born January 23, 1906 in New York , United States , † January 23, 1989 in Los Angeles ) was an American film architect .

Life

Lonergan had attended Columbia University and worked for several years as a lecturer in the history of architecture at New York University . He also worked as an architect at the New York School of Decoration and Design.

He started his film career in 1938 as an illustrator at MGM . In 1945 Arthur Lonergan established himself as a freelance film architect. In this area he designed buildings for conventional entertainment film productions for the next 25 years. Notable were some of his sci-fi fabric backdrops. In this genre he created the remarkable extraterrestrial planetary world in the 1950s classic Alarm in Space . For his buildings for the Hollywood melodrama ... because nobody is without guilt , he was nominated for an Oscar in 1967 . In addition to his work for the cinema, Lonergan designed the decorations for various episodes of American television series, including The Loretta Young Show, The Falcon, Topper, Life of Riley and Alfred Hitchcock Presents .

Arthur Lonergan was temporarily (1952-54) President of the Society of Motion Picture Art Directors and, after his retirement from the film business in 1971, served as a design consultant at the Disney theme park in Japan . Arthur Lonergan died on his 83rd birthday.
