Arthur Nobile

Arthur Nobile (born May 6, 1920 in Newark , New Jersey , † January 13, 2004 ) was an American microbiologist . He is known for developing prednisone and prednisolone .

Nobile grew up in Belleville . After military service with the Air Force in the Philippines, he studied at the University of California, Berkeley with a bachelor's degree in 1950. He then worked as a microbiologist in the pharmaceutical industry. In the early 1950s he developed prednisone and prednisolone at Schering-Plow . It found wide use as an immunosuppressant. Most recently he lived in Midlothian .

In 1996 he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame .
