Arthur Talbot (* 1874 in Green Heath, Hednesford ; † unknown) was an English football player .

Career

Talbot was active as a goalkeeper for Hednesford Town from 1892 , where his three brothers Jack (father of the later professional footballers Alec and Les ), Alfred and Hezekiah played. The club withdrew in 1892 from the Birmingham & District League and joined the Walsall & District Junior League from 1894 , in which 1895 and 1896 the second place was occupied. At the end of November 1896, Talbot came to the capital club Woolwich Arsenal , where both regular goalkeeper Bill Fairclough and his replacement Jack Leather were out due to injuries within a short time . Talbot played as a test player in a friendly against Millwall Athletic , after which he was signed. A correspondent noted about his performance in the game played in front of 8000 spectators: "He is quite tall and well built, and gave a splendid performance of himself, cleverly held many difficult shots with the confidence of an experienced player."

Talbot made his first competitive appearance at Arsenal in the Football League Second Division on December 5, 1896 with a 3-2 win at Lincoln City , but a week later he lost an 8-0 defeat against Loughborough FC (at that time with 2 wins and 12 defeats from 14 games bottom of the table), to this day Arsenal's record defeat in a league game. The press release contradicts Talbot's part in the defeat, while according to the Sheffield Daily Telegraph "Talbot was responsible to some extent," the Kentish Mercury reported that Talbot had no chance of "at least seven of the eight goals. "

Talbot played three more league games (and thus all five league games in December) before Leather was fit again, with a total of three wins and two defeats. In addition, Talbot completed a few games for the reserve team and the benefit game against Aston Villa in favor of the family of Joe Powell , an Arsenal player who died at the end of November 1896 from injury from a football game. At the end of the season his club membership ended and Talbot joined the Clowne Rovers in Derbyshire , where his brother Jack also played. In 1898 he was reamateurized by the Football Association .
