Arthur Zitscher (born May 3, 1880 in Hanover , † August 28, 1965 probably in Kronberg im Taunus ) was a German industrial chemist. He is known for developing the naphthol AS dyes.

Zitscher went to secondary school in Hanover and from 1899 studied chemistry at the TH Hanover , in Heidelberg and Leipzig and received his doctorate summa cum laude in Leipzig in 1906 ( unsaturated dicarboxylic acids from cyclic ketones and succinic acid esters ). After that, he was a chemist in the share-sugar factory in Stendal and since 1907 head of research for chemical plant Oehler of the chemical factory Griesheim electron (later the Offenbach plant of Hoechst) in Offenbach am Main .

There he researched dyes and discovered in 1912 with August Leopold Laska (1869–1952) and Adolf Winther (1854–1946) the naphthol-AS dyes and the dyeing process for them. Zitscher then built up the range of naphthol AS dyes and was involved in around 120 patents.

In 1934 he became head of research at what was now the IG Farben plant in Offenbach as the successor to Laska and head of the Naphthol AS Commission and had power of attorney there from 1935.

After the war, he helped rebuild the war-destroyed factories and drove daily from his home in Kronberg to Offenbach. In 1950 he retired.

Honors

In 1954 he received the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .

He received the Perkin Medal of the British Society of Dyers and Colourists and the Adolf von Baeyer Medal . Hoechst AG named its research laboratory in Offenbach after him and Laska.

In 1974 a street in Offenbach was named after him.
