The Artibonite (French) or Río Artibonito (Spanish; Hatitian : Latibonit ) is the longest river on the island of Hispaniola .

Course and tributaries

The Artibonite rises at the foot of the Nalga de Maco in the Cordillera Central mountains in the Dominican Republic . From there it runs in a south-westerly direction, then parallel to the Dominican-Haitian border, only a few kilometers east of it, to the hamlet of Pedro Santana. From Pedro Santana it becomes a border river for a short stretch to the confluence of the Río Macasías. From there it flows through Haiti , first through the Département du Center , then through the Département Artibonite named after it . To the north of Saint-Marc , the Artibonite flows into the Gulf of Gonâve at Grand-Saline . At the Artibonite are u. a. the cities of Mirebalais and Verrettes .

Its main tributaries are Rivière Boucan Carré, Rivière Estère, Rivière Fer à Cheval, Rivière Guayamouc, Rivière Libon, Rivière Macasia, Rivière Thomonde and Rivière La Tombe.

use

The Artibonite is used in the area around Mirebalais and especially from Verrettes to shortly before the estuary to irrigate the adjacent fields.

25 percent of Haiti's electricity is generated at the Péligre Dam power station. When it was completed in 1957, the dam was the highest in the world at the time. The dam has a capacity of 328 million m³. Another hydropower plant called "Artibonite 4 C" is being planned.
