history
The city was founded by the French in 1695 near an old Taíno settlement. In 1905 the Compagnie Nationale built a 100 km long railway line between Port-au-Prince and Saint-Marc.
In 2004 there were serious clashes between government opponents and the security forces in Haiti. In February 2004, 50 opposition activists are said to have been killed in Saint-Marc during the unrest . Former Haitian Prime Minister Yvon Neptune was therefore arrested in June 2004 on charges of ordering the Saint-Marc massacre.
