Artur Pachner
Artur Pachner (born March 24, 1874 in Německý Brod, today Havlíčkův Brod ; † January 1944 in Auschwitz concentration camp ) was a Czechoslovak dentist and publicist of Jewish origin who was a victim of the Holocaust .
Life
Artur Pachner was the son of Josef Pachner, a producer of schnapps and liqueurs who was also active in other fields: Artur Pachner was a co-founder of the Jewish cemetery in what was then Německý Brod, was active in the Jewish community, of which he was temporarily chairman, and also belonged to the city administration. Artur Pachner had five brothers and a sister. In 1903 Pachner married Gabriela Schillerová, with whom he had the daughter Milada.
Pachner attended a grammar school in Německý Brod from 1883 to 1891 and then studied medicine at the Charles University in Prague, later he completed additional studies in Berlin. In 1899 he moved to Chrudim, became a dentist and opened a practice there. He was also interested in topics related to his field such as stomatology , healing methods with silver, metallurgy and the like. a., gave lectures and published articles in magazines such as Časopis českých lékařů , Vesmír , Příroda , Národní listy or Lidové noviny , which have been translated into other languages. In the 1937 edition of the renowned encyclopedia Ottův slovník naučný he was named with its own keyword. He also translated from Polish himself.
After the country was occupied by the Wehrmacht , Artur Pachner was arrested with his wife in Chrudim. On December 5, 1942, they were deported with Transport Cf from Pardubice to the Theresienstadt concentration camp , where they were interned for about a year; Artur Pachner tried to secretly help his fellow prisoners as a doctor, edited and illegally distributed a journal there. After this and his other records (diary, sociological studies on Jews, etc.) had been found, he was moved to the Small Fortress . On 18 December 1942 he was with his wife with the transport Ds in the so-called Theresienstadt family camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau deported.
Artur Pachner was murdered in Auschwitz. The date of his death is given differently: In two sources there is the indefinite indication of 1944 ("in late January 1944") or "apparently in January 1944" on the stumbling block that was laid in honor of Artur Pachner on September 20, 2017 , then the date is January 29, 1944; a source gives December 18, 1943 as the date of death, but it could be confused with the date on which Artur Pachner was deported from Theresienstadt to Auschwitz.
Stumbling block
Artur Pachner received a stumbling block in memory of ten other citizens of Chrudim who were murdered in the concentration camps . The eleven stumbling blocks were laid by Gunter Demnig on September 20, 2017 . The stumbling block at Resselovo náměstí 134 bears the following text (here with a translation):
