Artur Schuschnigg , Edler von Schuschnigg from 1898 to 1919 , (born January 14, 1865 in Kufstein , † October 20, 1938 in Vienna ) was an Austrian officer.

Life

Artur Schuschnigg completed an apprenticeship at the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt and was retired as a lieutenant in Feldjäger Battalion No. 9 in 1885 . When his father Alois was raised to the nobility , he was allowed to call himself Edler von Schuschnigg from 1898 . He took part in the First World War as a regimental commander. In the first year of the war, he led the fortress occupation of the war port Pola . From August 1915 on, he commanded the Carinthian Landwehr Infantry Regiment No. 4. At the end of the war he was taken prisoner in Italy, from which he returned in August 1919. He received several awards in the war. He retired on October 31, 1918. In March 1922 Schuschnigg received the titular rank of major general , in January 1938 the titular rank of field marshal lieutenant .

Artur Schuschnigg was married to Anna, née Wopfner (1872–1935), a sister of the historian Hermann Wopfner , and had two sons. His eldest son was the future Austrian Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg (1897–1977), his younger son the future art historian and radio worker Artur Schuschnigg (1904–1990).
