Aruna Asaf Ali

Aruna Asaf Ali (born Aruna Ganguli ; born July 16, 1909 in Kalka , † July 29, 1996 in New Delhi ) was an Indian freedom fighter . It became widely known for the flag of the Indian National Congress in the Gowalia Tank Park in Bombay (now Mumbai ) during the Quit India movement (1942).

Life

Aruna was born into a Bengali Brahmo Samaj family and initially worked as a teacher in Calcutta . In 1928 she married the much older Muslim Asaf Ali . She became an active member of the Indian National Congress . She was jailed for political activities related to the Salt March .

In 1942, she hoisted the flag of the Indian National Congress in Park Gowalia Tank in Bombay (now Mumbai ) as part of the Quit India movement . Later she went underground. She was also active in various socialist party groups. In 1958 she was elected the first woman mayor of Delhi . During this time she worked and lived closely with Edatata Narayanan and brought out various publications. Although she rejoined the National Congress in 1964, she stayed away from active politics.

Aruna received the Bharat Ratna award posthumously in 1997 .
