The schematic war organization of the Red Army on June 22, 1941 shows the deployment of the Red Army on the western border of the Soviet Union at the beginning of the German invasion of the Soviet Union . The Red Army troops were divided into four fronts and an independent army. One front roughly corresponded to an army group of the German Wehrmacht . In addition to the general Stawka reserve, there were also 10 internal military districts and the Far Eastern front .
Overview
The northern front was formed by the Leningrad Military District , the northwest front by the Baltic Special Military District , the western front emerged from the Western Special Military District , and the southwest front emerged from the Kiev Special Military District . The southern front was not formed from the Odessa military district until June 25, 1941 .
- The troops on the border with Finland were subordinate to the northern front under Colonel General Markian Michailowitsch Popow . These included - from the north - the 14th Army , the 7th Army , the 23rd Army and numerous divisions that were directly subordinate to the front command. The northern front had 15 rifle divisions in three rifle corps, two mechanized corps with 4 armored divisions and 2 motorized rifle divisions, a total of about 21 divisions plus units assigned to the front.
- The Northwest Front under Colonel General Fyodor Kuznetsov had the mission to defend the Baltic States and consisted of the 8th Army , the 11th Army , the 27th Army and front troops. A total of 19 rifle divisions, 2 motorized rifle divisions and 3 armored divisions in two mechanized corps and seven rifle corps (23 divisions).
- The Western Front under General Dmitry Pavlov were under the 3rd Army , the 4th Army , the 10th Army and the Army High Command of the 13th Army , reinforced by independent organizations. The total strength was 24 rifle divisions, 6 motorized rifle divisions, 2 cavalry divisions, 12 armored divisions in six mechanized corps, eight rifle and one cavalry corps and front troops (44 divisions).
- The Southwest Front under Colonel General Mikhail Petrovich Kirponos was formed by the 5th Army , the 6th Army , the 12th Army and the 26th Army in conjunction with units under the command of the front commander. In total, she had 21 rifle divisions, 7 mountain rifle divisions, 8 motorized rifle divisions, 16 tank divisions and 2 cavalry divisions in eleven rifle corps, eight mechanized corps and one cavalry corps in addition to the front troops (54 divisions).
- The southern front under General Ivan Vladimirovich Tjulenew was not formally formed until June 25, 1941 from the 9th Independent Army and the 18th Army with the 2nd, 16th and 18th Mechanized Corps. The front had 19 rifle divisions, 1 mountain rifle divisions, 3 motorized rifle divisions, 6 tank divisions and 3 cavalry divisions (about 30 divisions).
- In addition to the armies on the front lines, there were six other armies in the west: the 16th Army , the 19th Army , the 20th Army , the 21st Army , the 22nd Army, and the 24th Army , along with separate units who have favourited Stawka Reserve . Altogether another 41 rifle divisions in fourteen rifle corps and five mechanized corps with 10 armored and 5 motorized rifle divisions (56 divisions), which were still on the march, which was not completed until July 10, 1941.
This results in a total strength of about 25 June 1941 for the Red Army in the west, including the reserve armies
- 21 armies with 47 rifle, 25 mechanized and 3 cavalry corps;
- with 138 rifle divisions, 7 mountain rifle divisions, 25 motorized rifle divisions, 49 tank divisions and 6 cavalry divisions.
Then there are the 10 internal military districts of the Soviet Union and the Far Eastern Front.
- The 41st Rifle Corps with 2 rifle divisions and various other troops belonged to the Moscow military district under Colonel General Pawel Artemewitsch Artemjew .
- The Volga Military District was under the command of General Vasily Filippowitsch Gerasimenko , but had no major groups worth mentioning.
- The Orel military district was commanded by General Fyodor Nikitich Remesov . The 30th Rifle Corps with 3 rifle divisions and the 33rd Rifle Corps with another 3 rifle divisions were subordinate to him. There was also the 23rd Mechanized Corps with 2 armored and 1 motorized rifle divisions. There are also 1 independent rifle division and other support troops.
- The Uralsk Military District , headquartered in Yekaterinburg , had no major units under its command. The commanding general was Filipp Afanasewitsch Yerschakow .
- The Siberian Military District had a few support groups, including a separate rifle regiment. The commanding officer was General Stepan Andrianowitsch Kalinin .
- The headquarters of the 18th Army with 1 rifle division and the 2nd Airborne Corps with 3 airborne brigades were subordinate to the Kharkov military district under the command of General Andrei Kirillowitsch Smirnow .
- The North Caucasian Military District included the 64th Rifle Corps with 2 divisions, 1 independent rifle division, 1 independent mountain rifle division and support units.
- The 3rd Rifle Corps (1 Rifle Division and 2 Mountain Rifle Divisions), the 23rd Rifle Corps (1 Rifle Division and 1 Mountain Rifle Division) and the 40th Rifle Corps (1 Rifle Division and 1 Mountain Rifle Division) were subordinate to the Transcaucasian Military District. In addition, the 28th Mechanized Corps (2 Panzer Divisions and 1 Motorized Rifle Division) was in this district on June 22, 1941. Furthermore, 3 independent mountain rifle divisions, 1 independent cavalry division and 1 independent mountain cavalry division were stationed there. The commanding officer was General Dmitri Timofejewitsch Kozlov .
- The Central Asian Military District was led by Lieutenant General Sergei Georgievich Trofimenko . The 58th Rifle Corps (3 mountain rifle divisions), the 4th Cavalry Corps (3 mountain cavalry divisions) and the 27th Mechanized Corps (2 tank divisions, 1 motorized rifle division) were available to him. There was also an independent rifle division and other support troops.
- The Arkhangelsk Military District comprised on 22 June 1941 2 Independent rifle divisions and various air and coastal defense troops. The commander was General Vladimir Yakovlevich Katschalow .
