Maksim Purkayev ( Russian Максим Алексеевич Пуркаев ., Scientific transliteration Maksim Aleksejevič Purkajev ; born August 14 . Jul / 26. August  1894 greg. In Nalitowo, Government Simbirsk ; † 1. January 1953 in Moscow ) was a Soviet general .

Life

Purkajew served from 1915 as an ensign in the Imperial Russian Army during the First World War (1914-1918). After the October Revolution he joined the Red Army in 1918 and served as a company and battalion chief during the Russian Civil War . a. in the 24th division. He was a member of the CPSU since 1919. From 1923 he was regiment commander. After graduating from the " Frunze Military Academy ", he was promoted to division commander in 1936 . From 1938 he was finally Chief of Staff of the Belarusian Military District. In 1940 he took up the same position in the Kiev Special Military District.

When the German attack on the Soviet Union began , it became the Southwest Front under Army General M. P. Kirponos (1892–1941). In July 1941, however, Purkayev was relieved to become commander of the 60th (Reserve) Army . This became the 3rd Shock Army in January 1942 , headed by Purkayev in the winter battles near Cholm and Demyansk . In August 1942 he took command of the troops on the Kalinin Front . In the winter of 1942/43 he was able to win the battles for Velikiye Luki , but in " Operation Mars " against the German front at Rzhev , he fell short of expectations. In April 1943 he was therefore entrusted with the command of the 2nd Far Eastern Front . With this he played a decisive role in the " Operation Auguststurm " against the Japanese troops in 1945 .

Thereafter Purkayev remained in command of the Far Eastern Military District from September 1945 to January 1947. At the same time he became a member of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union . He then served from June 1947 as chief of staff and first deputy commander of the troops in the Far East. Then Purkayev was from July 1952 director of the military higher education in the Ministry of Defense of the USSR. However, he died shortly afterwards.
