Evelyn Schmidt (born June 20, 1949 in Görlitz ) is a German film director.

Life

Schmidt did her Abitur in 1968 and then an apprenticeship as a bookseller. After a one-year traineeship at the German TV broadcaster , she studied directing at the HFF University of Applied Sciences in Babelsberg . After graduating in 1974, she was Konrad Wolf's master class student until 1977 , during which time she made the film Lasset die Kindlein ... (based on a screenplay by Wolfgang Kohlhaase ) on behalf of the television company in 1976 , which was awarded the GDR's Silver Laurel in 1978. Television was awarded. Then she was employed as an assistant director at the DEFA studio for feature films and assisted z. B. the Chilean director Orlando Lübbert in his DEFA project The transition (1977).

After her next film Auf dem Sprung (1984) also got bad reviews, Schmidt worked again as an assistant director, for example for Roland Gräf ( Das Haus am Fluß , 1984) and Jürgen Brauer ( Sehnsucht , 1989). Her next project of her own, the children's film Felix and the Wolf (1988), was a success, and in 1990 she got a permanent position as a DEFA director. Her last film The Hat was released in 1991; in the same year she was dismissed due to the dissolution of DEFA.

After no further film projects came about, Schmidt worked in the Pankow theater workshop, as a director in Berlin off-theaters, as a lecturer at adult education centers and as a visiting professor at the HFF Potsdam-Babelsberg. In addition, she was chairwoman of the Berlin Film and Television Association (BFFV) until the end of 2007 and works as a lecturer for camera acting at Valentin Plătăreanu's private drama school in Charlottenburg .

Along with Bärbl Bergmann , Hannelore Unterberg , Ingrid Sander , Iris Gusner , Christa Mühl , Karola Hattop and Ingrid Reschke, who died in 1971, Schmidt was one of the few feature film directors at DEFA.
