Bärbl Bergmann (born September 5, 1931 in Berlin , † May 2003 in Potsdam ) was a German film director and screenwriter. She was the first woman to work as a director in the DEFA studio for feature films.

Life

After graduating from high school, Bergmann initially trained as a photographer from 1950 to 1952 at the Weißensee University of Applied Arts. This was followed by an internship at DEFA and work as an assistant director for Wolfgang Bartsch and Heiner Carow, among others . From 1955 she worked as a director in the DEFA studio for popular science films and from 1958 worked as a freelance director and writer for the DEFA studio for feature films. She devotes herself primarily to children's films and made her directorial debut in 1959 with the short film An Unusual Day , for which she also wrote the screenplay. She was the first female director in the DEFA feature film studio, which produced only a few female feature film directors: Evelyn Schmidt , Hannelore Unterberg , Ingrid Sander , Iris Gusner , Christa Mühl , Karola Hattop and Ingrid Reschke .

Bergmann lived in Egypt from 1964 to 1967 , where she taught with her husband Helmut Bergmann (1926–1998) at the Cinema High Institute in Cairo . The film Hansel and Gretel with Helmut Bergmann at the camera was made for Cairo television in 1966 . Back in Germany, Bergmann took on assistant direction for the television film Othello under Walter Felsenstein and Georg Mielke . From 1972 to 1983 Bergmann was employed in the DEFA studio for documentary films and then worked on the feature film section and at the Potsdam district center in the GDR's Association of Film and TV Makers.

Bergmann lived in Potsdam , where she died in 2003. She was buried in her husband's grave in the Goethe cemetery in Potsdam-Babelsberg .
