Helmut Bergmann (cameraman)
Helmut Bergmann (born February 15, 1926 in Niederkaina ; † March 15, 1998 in Potsdam ) was a German cameraman .
Life
Bergmann was born the son of a craftsman and a cook in Niederkaina near Bautzen . When he was five years old, the family moved to Dresden . Bergmann took part in the Second World War as a soldier and became a prisoner of war . After the end of the war he lived in the western occupation zones and in 1947 went to the Soviet occupation zone , which later became the GDR.
Bergmann came to DEFA in 1949 at the instigation of his older brother, the cameraman Werner Bergmann , as his assistant. Soon he was hired as an assistant by other cameramen and directors. After his first own film as a cameraman - Bergmann made the short documentary Our Steelworkers from Riesa in 1951 - Bergmann worked exclusively on short, documentary and educational films until 1959. The collaboration with Wolfgang Bartsch and Heiner Carow, among others, became important .
He also worked with his brother, but then already at the DEFA feature film studio, where Bergmann moved in the mid-1950s. In 1956, both shared the camerawork for the film satire Der Hauptmann von Köln . They called him Amigo and was Bergmann's "first important film" as a cameraman in 1959. This was followed by love films such as Confusion of Love (1959), but also fairy tale films, including Little Red Riding Hood (1962).
From 1964 to 1967 Bergmann worked as a lecturer for camera and as a technical consultant at the Cinema High Institute in Cairo . The films Lost Days (1964) and Hansel and Gretel (1966) were made for Cairo television . Back in the GDR, numerous contemporary films were made with Bergmann in front of the camera. Bergmann worked with director Helmut Dziuba on eight films , for example on Als Unku Ede's girlfriend was and appearance was compulsory . When DEFA was wound up in 1991, Bergmann withdrew from the film business. Bergmann, who was married to the filmmaker Bärbl Bergmann , died in Potsdam in 1998 after a long and serious illness.
