Little Red Riding Hood is a DEFA fairy tale film from 1962 with Blanche Kommerell in the title role. For Götz Friedrich this work was his directorial debut. action

Little Red Riding Hood, who always wears a red skullcap, lives with her father, a hunter, and her mother in a little house in the woods. His friends are the rabbit and the bear. The wolf, who has already felt the shotgun from Little Red Riding Hood's father, and the fox are his enemies.

When Little Red Riding Hood is home alone one day because her parents have gone to the market, the wolf and the fox want to eat Little Red Riding Hood's geese. The fox dresses up, but is driven away by Little Red Riding Hood. When he returns to the wolf without having achieved anything, the wolf decides to eat Little Red Riding Hood and Grandmother.

Little Red Riding Hood gets a visit from the bunny, who immediately warns Little Red Riding Hood. Since the grandmother has a cold, Little Red Riding Hood and the bunny set off and take milk and honey as well as wine and cake with them. Little Red Riding Hood has to promise her mother not to stray from the path and return home immediately; the bunny should take care of Little Red Riding Hood. On the way they meet the bear who accompanies them. But since he is busy with the milk and honey supplies intended for the grandmother, the bunny has to turn back and fetch more.

In the meantime the fox, disguised as a woman, has found out that Little Red Riding Hood is out in the woods. Wolf and fox forge a plan: The fox pretends to be injured. He sustained the injuries during a fight with the wolf; he was lying, also seriously injured, in a cave. He tells the bear about a tree with a large supply of honey; He reveals a spot in the forest to Little Red Riding Hood where she can collect mushrooms for her grandmother. There Little Red Riding Hood is surprised by the lurking wolf, but is able to put him to flight.

The fox sprinkles chalk powder over the wolf's fur so that it looks like a dog and can sneak into the grandmother's house. The bunny sets out to get Little Red Riding Hood's parents to help. While Little Red Riding Hood continues on his way, the wolf puts the plan into action and eats the grandmother. When she arrives at her grandmother's house, Little Red Riding Hood wonders why grandmother suddenly has such big ears and so big eyes. When the girl wonders about her grandmother's big mouth, the wolf devours her too.

Little Red Riding Hood's parents arrive and free the grandmother and Little Red Riding Hood from the wolf's belly. He is tied up and locked in a cage; Little Red Riding Hood promises her mother that she will never go astray again.

Production background, publication

After Hans-Günter Bohm staged a television adaptation in 1960, Götz Friedrich's first directorial work was followed in 1962 by a theatrical version with debut actor Blanche Kommerell , the daughter of the then famous actress Ruth Kommerell .

The film premiered on July 13, 1962. With 5,769,400 million moviegoers, it ranks 13th among the most successful GDR films.

criticism

The district newspaper Sächsische Latest Nachrichten wrote in its edition of July 29, 1962: “But it is bad with the wolf and the fox. Seen from the child's psyche, that's a real horror. […] The children will be horrified and will dream terribly of these beasts, and the big people? They would have liked to see the fairy tale that the people created for themselves. Nothing else."

The film-dienst wrote: “DEFA film adaptation of the popular fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. The only cinematic work by the opera director Götz Friedrich, who also incorporated stage experiences with the Prokofiev singspiel " Peter and the Wolf " and the Felsenstein production " The Cunning Little Fox " when designing the animal figures .
