Alwin the last is a German comedy film of the DEFA of Hubert Hoelzke from the year 1960 .

action

Alwin Schmieder, his younger brother August and his friend Otto are the only men in the village who have not yet joined the LPG . For the chicken expert August, the question does not arise either, because he is only a servant of his brother, from whom he receives board and lodging, but rarely any payment. Alwin has been a widower for a short time and now realizes that he can no longer cope with the household without his Amanda. His brother helps him, but his son Karl rarely lends a hand on the farm, for example. He is in the LPG and has also met a “political” person in town who Alwin rejects without knowing her and who wants to keep Karl away at all costs.

Alwin had Otto put a marriage advertisement in the Sunday mail, but for the sake of discretion Otto sent it for an “A. Schmieder ”gives up. August, on the other hand, looks in the newspaper for an advertisement, but for a mother hen. This means that Alwin always has to intercept the postman so that August does not receive the wrong letters. However, Alwin's marriage idea is driven out by his wife's will, which stipulates that, in the event of remarriage, Alwin must give two-fifths of his fortune to Amanda's sister Berta. Karl, on the other hand, will lose his land in his will if he does not marry in a year.

So far, LPG chairman Ernst Baldauf has tried in vain to convince Alwin to give up one of his empty rooms for an LPGer. Karl's “Political” has meanwhile arrived in the village - her name is Bärbel and she wants to convince Alwin of herself. She appears allegedly by chance at the Schmieder house to borrow a chicken catalog. Since she's already there, she cleans the room straight away and comes over more and more often over the next few days to do the household chores. Alwin falls in love with her and now does everything in his power to bring her together with Karl. He also determines that she will move into one of the vacant chambers. Meanwhile, August gets to know the chicken farmer Karoline Gutjahr, who had actually responded to Alwin's marriage advertisement. August took the letter and answered Karoline truthfully that he already had a young mother hen and therefore could not accept her offer. Karoline felt ridiculous and wanted to confront August. When the misunderstanding is cleared up, they both realize that they like each other. August explains to the perplexed Alwin that he will get married and live with Karoline - on her farm and in the LPG. Alwin, on the other hand, was planning to propose to Karoline herself, as Amanda's testamentary clause turned out to be null and void because her sister Berta has already passed away. Alwin now has to accept further strokes of fate: Karl and Bärbel explain to him that Bärbel is Alwin's political and future daughter-in-law. Alwin takes it calmly, however, because everything is seen in a different light when you know the person who is politically active. Otto, in turn, decided to join the LPG. He gives Alwin, who is now the last non-LPGer in the village, his double LPG application and Alwin is left alone. He slowly unfolds the application and begins to read it.

production

Alwin the Last is based on the play of the same name by Margret Gruchmann-Reuter and Erich Heller . The costumes created Gerda Sachs , the production design was by Reinhard Welz .

Alwin the Last had its premiere on September 23, 1960 in the Berlin Colosseum and in the Potsdamer Kino Melodie . On May 1, 1961, the film was shown on DFF 1 for the first time on East German television. It was the first movie that director Hubert Hoelzke made. He himself can be seen in a supporting role as a young farmer.

In addition to No Trouble with Cleopatra and Senta on the Astray , the film was one of DEFA's works, which are "fickle cinematic calls to join the LPG".

criticism

The contemporary criticism found that the film was humorous, but in social terms too little to deal with "friend and opponent". For the film service , Alwin the Last was an "undemanding, only moderately amusing comedy"
