Osowiec-Twierdza is a village of the urban-and-rural commune ( gmina miejsko-wiejska ) Goniądz in the Powiat Moniecki in the Podlaskie Voivodeship , Poland . The place is on the river Biebrza . From 1743 to 1827 Osowiec had city rights as Marcinpol.

Geographical location

Osowiec-Twierdza is located about five kilometers from Goniądz , twelve kilometers from Mońki and 42 kilometers from Białystok , in the Podlachian plain in the Biebrza river valley.

Osowiec fortress

Under Tsar Alexander III. a fortress (in Polish: Twierdza Osowiec ) was built here from 1882 to 1887 . Their task was to protect the tsarist empire to the west. She played in the First World War a significant role, no longer in the Second World War .
