Goniądz (German Gonionds ) is a city in the Podlaskie Voivodeship in Poland . It is the seat of the town-and-country municipality of the same name in the Powiat Moniecki with about 5000 inhabitants.

history

The first documentary mention of today's Goniądz comes from a document dated August 14, 1358. In 1547 Goniądz was granted town charter. A school was mentioned for the first time in 1571. During the third partition of Poland , the city came under Prussian rule ( New East Prussia ), then in 1807 under Russian rule. After the end of the First World War , the city became part of the re-established Poland . In 1921 the church burned down from 1779, after which a new one was built and inaugurated in 1924.

At the beginning of the Second World War , Goniądz was occupied by the Red Army . When the war against the Soviet Union began , the Wehrmacht occupied the city. In 1944 the Wehrmacht withdrew from the area and Soviet soldiers occupied the area.

Population development

In 1765 about 1500 people lived in the city, in 1897 there were 3402. On December 31, 2008, 5223 inhabitants lived in the municipality of Goniądz and eight years later in the town of 1824 people.

The city is located on Voivodship Road 670 ( droga wojewódzka 670 , ext. 670). This begins about five kilometers west of Goniądz as a junction from the national road 65 ( Droga krajowa 65 ). About 25 kilometers east of Goniądz, the 670 crosses the town of Suchowola and crosses national road 8 at the same time as European road 67 .

Slightly south of the city is the Goniądz stop on the Głomno – Białystok railway line . The nearest international airport is Frédéric Chopin Airport in Warsaw , about 190 kilometers to the southwest.
