Asaf Ali (born May 11, 1888 in Delhi , † April 1, 1953 in Bern ) was an Indian lawyer, politician and diplomat .

Life

Ali attended St. Stephen's College in Delhi and then went to the UK to study law. In 1912 he was inducted into the Lincoln's Inn Bar Association. After returning to India, he joined the nationalists. As a result, he was tried on the Defense of India Act in 1918 . During the process, he was able to successfully defend himself. Asaf continued to be active in the independence movement and was imprisoned several times over the next few years. In 1928 he married Aruna Ganguli .

As an active member of the Muslim Nationalist Party , he was elected to the Central Legislative Assembly in 1935 . Ali received strong support from both Muslims and Hindus. In a later election, he stood for the Congress Party , defeating the Muslim League candidate . As a member of parliament, he was active in questions of foreign and defense policy, as well as in constitutional matters. He also served as a deputy leader in the Central Legislative Assembly for his party . From September 1946 Ali was responsible for transport and rail traffic in the Indian interim government. From February 1947 to April 1948 he was the first Indian ambassador to the United States . He then returned to India to become governor of Orissa . Due to the strenuous travel and work associated with it, his health deteriorated continuously, so that he resigned as governor in May 1952. Ali has now been appointed Indian envoy in Switzerland , with simultaneous accreditation in Austria and the Holy See . On the night of April 1, 1953, Ali died of a heart attack in Bern at the age of 64 .
