Arunima Sinha (* 1988 ) is an Indian volleyball player and mountaineer . In 2013, she became the first woman with an amputation to climb Mount Everest .

Life

Arunima Sinha grew up in Ambedkar Nagar in Uttar Pradesh . She successfully played volleyball at the national level, but had to retire in 2011 after her leg was amputated as a result of a robbery. In this robbery, she was thrown from the train by the perpetrators when she resisted. The Indian state railway company initially refused to recognize Sinha's legal claims from the accident. After a seven-year legal battle, she was finally awarded a sum of 700,000  rupees , or around 9,000 euros. Arunima Sinha founded the charitable Arunima Foundation , which primarily supports people with disabilities . In 2018 she received an honorary doctorate from the University of Strathclyde .

Arunima Sinha trained to climb Everest with Bachendri Pal , who was the first Indian woman to climb Mount Everest. During the ascent in May 2013, there were several problems with her prosthetic leg and she also fell several times. After Mount Everest, Arunima Sinha also climbed Kilimanjaro in Africa, Mount Kosciuszko in Australia, Aconcagua in South America, the Carstensz pyramid in Indonesia and Elbrus in Europe. It has thus climbed peaks on five continents.

In December 2014, Arunima Sinha published a book called Born again on the mountain ; Narendra Modi took over the presentation of the book.

Awards

For 2014, Arunima Sinha received the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award . In 2015 she was awarded the Padma Shri , a high Indian civil order. In 2016 she received the Yash Bharti Award from her home state Uttar Pradesh.
