Aryghuary

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aryghuary , also Airigh Ghuaidhre , is a deserted town on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . Aryghuary was in the east of the island about three kilometers south of Ballygrant and about nine kilometers northeast of Bowmore , the main town on the island. The closest town was Knocklearoch, two kilometers to the north . Aryghuary was accessible via a road that connects the Glenegedale area with what is now the A846 in Ballygrant. At the census of 1841 there were still 53 people living in Aryghuary. Ten years later the population had already dropped to 28 people. Today only the foundations of various buildings remain in the area of Aryghuary. Below are the remains of two kilns. The buildings had rectangular floor plans, the largest measuring 17 m × 4 m.

Surroundings

In the area around Aryghuary, traces of earlier settlement from different eras have been found. The oldest finds come from the Late Stone Age and were discovered south and southwest of the village. The stone artifacts and bone finds were determined to be around 5350 years old using the radiocarbon method. To the north are the remains of two round huts on two hills. Both huts were about eight meters in diameter. The outer walls had a thickness of 1.5 m and 2-3 m and are now preserved up to a height of 50 cm and 60 cm. To the southwest of Aryghuary is an elevated, level, oval platform that is secured by earth and rubble stones to a height of one meter. It is discussed whether this is the location of a previously unrecorded chapel with a surrounding cemetery. Based on measurements, the foundation walls of a building in the area could be identified, which supports the theory. Lead has been mined north of Aryghuary in the past . Remains of the former mines are still visible in the landscape today.
