Knocklearoch , also Knocklerach , is a small scattered settlement on the Scottish island of Islay and is therefore in the Council Area Argyll and Bute or the traditional Scottish county Argyllshire . It is located about one kilometer south of Ballygrant and five kilometers southwest of the Port Askaig ferry terminal . Aryghuary , which is now abandoned, was two kilometers south . Knocklearoch can be reached via a side road of the A846 .
Today, Knocklearoch essentially still consists of the partially listed Knocklearoch Farm . In 1841, 67 people were still counted in Knocklearoch. Knocklearoch is no longer listed in the 1851 census. The former inhabitants can be found in various places on the island. This could indicate an eviction of Knocklearoch in the course of the Highland Clearances .
Surroundings
Directly south of the farm there are two standing stones about 2.4 m apart . Both have triangular bases with edge lengths of 150 × 90 × 65 cm or 80 × 80 × 70 cm. Both stones are slightly inclined and would rise 1.95 m or 1.7 m high when standing upright.
A lead mine was once operated near Knochlearoch Farm . The exact location is not known. The foundation walls of the ruined miners' buildings can still be found in the vicinity of the farm.
