The Arzkarsee (also Arzkar-Stausee , sometimes also Arzker-Stausee , Italian Lago Quaira ) is a reservoir above the Ulten Valley northwest of St. Nikolaus in South Tyrol . It lies at an altitude of 2250  m and is thus the highest reservoir in the Ulten Valley area after the Grünsee .

Its gravity dam is 85 meters high and has a crown length of 464.8 meters. Their total volume is 610,000 m³. The 3257  m high peak of the Hasenöhrl rises about 2.5 kilometers west of the lake . Its glacier area with the Hasenöhrlferner and Kuppelwiesferner supplies the water for the lake. Its water surface covers about 30 hectares with a storage capacity of 12.6 million cubic meters.

The Arzkarsee was built from 1965 to 1966 as the last of the reservoirs for the hydropower plants in Ultental . A pressure tunnel leads from here to the Kuppelwieser Alm power station, 358 meters below . 13 cubic meters of water per second generate an output of 42 megawatts in the turbine there.

The system also works as a pumped storage plant, in which water can be pumped up from the Weißbrunnsee into the Arzkarsee with a high-performance pump during the low- consumption period , up to 8.5 m³ / s.

The dam of the Arzkarsee can be crossed on the top of the wall.
