The Ascidae are a family of predatory mites (Gamasida). They are common worldwide.

Way of life

The majority of the species in this family are free-living, they predatorily feed on insect eggs, young stages of other mites, as well as roundworms and their eggs. Some species feed on the mycelium of fungi, some live parasitically. Most species are associated with certain insect species such as bumblebees or bees, which they use for phoresis . Some genera can also be found in the noses of birds.

Systematics

There are two subfamilies, the Arctoseiinae , mainly the genus Arctoseius are distributed in the northern hemisphere to arctic regions. The Ascinae , on the other hand, only occur in tropical and subtropical areas. The family comprises around 40 genera worldwide:
