Growth form and habitat

Asclepias californica is a species of silk plants ( Asclepias ) in the subfamily of the silk plants (Asclepiadoideae) within the family of dog poison plants (Apocynaceae). It occurs only in California and northern Baja California .

description

Vegetative characteristics

Asclepias californica grows as a perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 20 to 90 cm. The upright, ascending, partly lying stems are very characteristically covered with white, spider-like hairs ( trichomes ).

The constantly against arranged on the stems leaves are sessile stalked until shortly (0 to 2 cm). The relatively thin and flexible, and at least in old age almost hairless leaf blade is 4 to 16 cm long and 2.5 to 7 cm wide - ovoid to lanceolate with a heart-shaped blade base and a pointed to blunt end.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from April to July. The terminal or near terminal approximately, seated, or on a 3 cm long inflorescence stem standing inflorescence is mehrblütig. The flower stalks are 2 to 4 cm long.

The relatively large flowers are hermaphroditic, radial symmetry and five-fold. The five sepals are about 4 mm long and ovoid to lanceolate and hairy densely white. The five purple-colored petals are strongly bent back and densely hairy. The crown lobes are 1 to 1.2 cm long. The purple gynostegium is sessile or short-stalked. The corolla lobes are deeply sack-shaped and 4 to 5 mm long. The horn-shaped extension is very small or can be absent. The stylus head has a length of about 3 mm and a diameter of about 5 mm.

The upstanding stems on curved follicles are at a length of 8 to 10 cm and a diameter of 2 to 2.5 cm wide-spindle-shaped and be towards the tip slowly thickness. Their surface is covered with white hairs. The oval seeds with a length of about 1 cm wide have an approximately 2 cm long head of hair.

Occurrence

Asclepias californica occurs exclusively in California (USA) and in northern Baja California (northern Mexico). It thrives there on dry soils at altitudes between 200 and 2100 meters (also data from 0 to 2500 meters).

use

Asclepias californica is also used as an ornamental plant.

Systematics

The species Asclepias californica is divided into two subspecies by Woodson:

  • Asclepias californica subsp. californica : Distribution: Southern California and Baja California (Northern Mexico). The gynostegium is almost seated and the crown lobes are heavily drooping at the base.
  • Asclepias californica subsp. greenei Woodson ; Distribution: Northern California. The gynostegium is clearly stalked and the crown lobes are hardly drooping at their base.
