Band history
The Jolly Boys emerged from the music group "Navy Island Swamp Boys". The Navy Island Swamp Boys were founded in the late 1940s or early 1950s and often played at Errol Flynn's parties . Members included Moses Deans on the banjo and guitar , Noel Lynch (also guitar) and "Papa" Brown on the rumba box . After this group broke up in 1955, Deans and Brown formed The Jolly Boys together with Derrick "Johnny" Henry ( maracas and drums), Martell Brown (guitar) and David "Sonny" Martin (also guitar). The name is said to have been thrown into the room by Errol Flynn. In the early days, the percussionist Allan Swymmer helped out regularly and was part of the standard line-up from the 1960s. The Jolly Boys became a well-known band in Port Antonio, rumored to be the best mento band in the community.
