The Ashikaga family ( Japanese 足 利 氏 Ashikaga-shi ) was a Japanese clan that established the Muromachi shogunate . It was a branch of the Minamoto family ( Seiwa-Genji ) and many famous families are descended from the Ashikaga, including the Hosokawa , Imagawa , Kira , Shiba, and Isshiki families . After the leading family of the Minamoto clan died out in the early Kamakura period , the Ashikaga were often viewed as the main branch of the Minamoto.
