Ash Ra Tempel (from 1977 only Ashra ) is a Berlin band that was founded in 1970 by Manuel Göttsching , Hartmut Enke and Klaus Schulze . At the beginning of the 1970s, the band, along with Tangerine Dream , Agitation Free , Guru Guru , Can and others, was the spearhead of the so-called Krautrock . The band started using synthesizers in addition to guitars very early on . Stylistically, the band can be assigned to the Berlin School , even if the focus was more on the guitars than on the synthesizers.

history

The debut album Ash Ra Tempel was recorded in 1971 in the studio of producer Conny Plank . Then Klaus Schulze left the band to start his solo career. In the following years further albums were produced with the core line-up Göttsching and Enke plus changing musicians. Also Harald Grosskopf on drums and Lüül (Lutz Ulbrich) on guitar and keyboards were involved in some albums.

From 1974 the band used Manuel Göttschings “Studio Roma” in Berlin and the Panne-Paulsen-Studio in Frankfurt am Main for their recordings. The album New Age of Earth , recorded by Manuel Göttsching alone , originally only published in France in 1976, was released in 1977 under the now shortened band name “Ashra”. In the years that followed, many tours and albums followed. Manuel Göttsching also recorded solo albums, e.g. For example, the worldwide acclaimed album E2-E4 , which was popular in the club scene in the 1990s and was remixed in various adaptations (e.g. under the name " Sueño Latino "). From 1997 the German musician Steve Baltes Ashra strengthened his samples and keyboards.

Individual evidence

  1. The record was made as a joint improvisation with Timothy Leary taking LSD in Switzerland. Leary only writes in his biography: "I made a rock'n'roll record with a German techno-rock group." (Timothy Leary: Because she knew what they were doing. Ein Rückblende, Munich, 1997, p. 401. )
