The Astrolabe Bay ( German  "Astrolabe", "Astrolabe Bay" ) is a large bay in the Bismarck Sea off the north coast of Papua New Guinea and a natural harbor for the city of Madang . It extends from Cape Iris in the south to Cape Croisilles in the north. It was discovered by Jules Dumont d'Urville in 1827 and named after his ship Astrolabe . In turn, this ship was named after another, the astrolabe of the missing French explorer Jean-François de La Pérouse . The astrolabe , after which the ships are named, is an instrument for navigation at sea.

During the German colonial period , Friedrich-Wilhelms-Hafen ( Madang , headquarters of the New Guinea Company ), Konstantinhafen (another station of the New Guinea Company), Stephansort (station of the Astrolabe Company ) and Prince Heinrichs-Hafen were important locations for German New Guinea Bay.

The Kabenau flows into the bay .
