Athabasca [ əθəbæskə ] is the Athabasca nearby places, with the status of a town ( English Town ). It is located in the Canadian province of Alberta , about 145 km north of Edmonton and is the center of the district ( English municipal district ) Athabasca County .

The settlement was created in 1877 by the Hudson's Bay Company under the name Athabasca Landing and expanded into a fur trading station in the following decades. During the Klondike Gold Rush , Athabasca was a transit camp for the prospectors who moved to Dawson by land . From 1912 to 1914, the place experienced an upswing, which was due to the general boom caused by the construction of railway lines and the land grabbing by settlers . The population rose to 2000 inhabitants. The boom came to an end with the recession in Alberta in 1914.

Athabasca University is located in Athabasca and specializes in distance learning .

Demographics

The census in 2016 showed a population of 2,965 inhabitants for the municipality, after the census in 2011 showed a population of 2,990 inhabitants for the municipality. Compared to the last census in 2011, the population has decreased by 0.8%, while the provincial average has increased by 11.6%. In the census period from 2006 to 2011, the number of inhabitants in the municipality decreased by 15.9%, while the provincial average increased by 10.8%.

For the 2016 census, a median age of 40.2 years was determined for the municipality . The median age of the province in 2016 was only 36.7 years. The average age was 40.8 years, or 37.8 years in the province. For the 2011 census, a median age of 38.8 years was determined for the municipality. The median age of the province in 2011 was only 36.5 years.
