Athenry Castle

Athenry Castle is a tower house in Athenry in Ireland's County Galway , which as a National Monument applies. The castle is located on Court Lane in the eastern part of Athenry on the west bank of the Clarin on a natural elevation and protected the ford over the river.

history

Even if the castle is called King John's Castle or King John's Court in the area (after the Lord of Ireland 1177–1216), it was only built 20 years after the end of the reign of John Ohneland.

The original donjon (built 1235-1240) was low and stocky; the roof was on the level of today's 1st floor. Meyler de Bermingham had the building expanded around 1250. In 1316 the castle was attacked, which led to the construction of the defensive walls . In the 15th century, the Berminghams moved from there to their town house near the market cross on the main square. In 1596 the castle fell into the hands of the O'Donnells .

The battlements date from the 13th century, and in the 15th century these parapets were integrated into the gables of the new roof.

In 2005 the castle was restored.

description

Castle from a different angle

Athenry Castle is a large, rectangular structure with sloping walls on the lower floor that originally only housed a hall on the upper floor and storage rooms on the ground floor. The battlements are from the 13th century and have high loopholes . In the 15th century, these parapets were integrated into the gables on the north and south sides of the new roof. Parts of the original enclosure of the castle have been preserved.

The original entrance was on the upper floor level and was reached via an external wooden staircase. The building was probably heated by a fire bowl in the middle of the hall; the smoke escaped through a shutter or an opening in the roof directly above. The lavatory is on the opposite side of the entrance.

There are beautiful stone carvings on the outside entrance and on the inside of two window openings.

The capitals are decorated with floral motifs in the style of the area known as the School of the West, a transition from Romanesque to Gothic .

A staircase set into the wall led to the top floor. Wall towers were built on the northeast and southeast corners, while the southwest corner was fortified by the gate.

In the literature

The castle appears in the historical novella for children Hoofbeats: Lara at Athenry Castle by Kathleen Duey , published in 2005 .
