The Athos straw flower ( Helichrysum sibthorpii Rouy , Syn. Helichrysum virgineum (Sm.) Griseb . Non DC. ) Is a species of the sunflower family (Asteraceae).
description
The Athos straw flower is a clump-shaped, perennial plant that is lignified at the base, reaches heights of 5 to 17 centimeters and has dense, woolly, whitish or grayish, glandless hair. The basal sheets measure 15 to 70 × 7 to 22 millimeters and are obverse-shaped, spatulate and blunt. The five to nine stem leaves are linear-spatulate, pointed and much smaller.
The baskets stand individually or more rarely in an ebony bouquet in twos or threes (rarely with four). They are short-stalked and 1.5 to 2 centimeters in diameter. The bracts are white, ovate-elongated, blunt and loosely arranged like a roof tile.
The flowering period extends from June to August.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 28 or 28 + 0-1B.
Occurrence
The Athos straw flower is endemic to Mount Athos and inhabits alpine limestone crevices at altitudes of 1750 to 2000 meters.
