The Atkinson cliffs are exposed rock cliffs up to 250 m high in the north of the island of Heard in the southern Indian Ocean . They rise between the Challenger and Nares glaciers .
The cliffs are named after John L. Atkinson, weather observer of a 1952 campaign of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions , who went overboard in Corinthian Bay in May 1952 and found himself after a night under ice cliffs and a subsequent one-day hike over the Baudissin Glacier to the station of the expedition on the banks of Atlas Cove .
