origin

There is no reliable record of the first name from which the short form Atze originated. It was probably developed independently of one another in different German dialects . Short forms from the Middle Ages can already be regarded as precursors, such as B. Azo , which arose from the Aldelbertus . The use of Azzo is documented in the area around Constance around 1259 . Also known are the sayings of Walther von der Vogelweide in the so-called Atze tone , including the poem Mir hât hêr Gêrhart Atze ein pfert / schozzen zIsenache ... from (L 104, 7, around 1205).

Possibly it is the corruption of the name Andreas. Also Artur or Matthias ( Matze ), since the Renaissance Alexander come into consideration. The last name of the Tyrolean writer Karl Atz can possibly be traced back to an old name change, while place names like Atzel or Atzerott seem to go back to old water words and the Hessian expression Atzel for Elster is a dialect peculiarity.

The term Atze was very widespread in the last few centuries, especially in Lusatian-Neumark , where it led to the formation of connotations in the sense of buddy , friend, brother or brother-in-law , more rarely also used for the respective female counterpart. Above all, Berlin has kept the term constantly present, where it means something like (big) brother. The popular GDR magazine Atze for children also got its name from this.
