Au Revoir Taipei is a 2010 romantic comedy that focuses on both love and the city of Taipei . It is the feature film debut of the Taiwanese director Arvin Chen and is best known in Germany for participating in the 2010 Berlinale .

action

Kai lives in Taipei, works in his parents' noodle shop and has a long-distance relationship with his girlfriend in Paris. To visit her, he makes a deal with the seedy brother Bao: Bao finances the plane ticket to France and in return Kai agrees to deliver a mysterious package.

The film shows Kai's last night in Taipei, where he and Susie, who works in a bookstore and shows a cautious interest in Kai, become embroiled in a turbulent sequence of events. Jiyong, Kai's best friend, Hong, Gao's right-hand man and leader of a group of young gangsters, and an unhappily in love policeman also appear.
Through a number of misunderstandings, car chases and a kidnapping, the goal of Paris takes a back seat. Instead, Kai discovers Taipei as the "city of love".

reception

In German-speaking countries, Au Revoir Taipei was generally positively received by the critics.
Cinema.de called the film a comic love story and wrote: Arvin Chen's feature film debut is a declaration of love for the films of the Nouvelle Vague. His playful romantic comedy does not reach the class of Godard […] or Truffaut […]. But the lightheartedness with which Chen tells his story is definitely reminiscent of the great role models.
