The Audi 14/50 hp Type K is a car of the middle class of the Audi Werke AG of Zwickau and was the first production car with left-hand drive in the German Reich . The car designed by Audi founder August Horch was presented at the Berlin Motor Show in autumn 1921 . 192 Type K were manufactured in Zwickau up to 1926 . The successor was the Audi Type M with a 70 hp six-cylinder engine , which was produced in series from 1925 .
The Audi 14/50 hp has a four-cylinder in - line engine with a displacement of 3.6 liters installed at the front . Consisting of an aluminum alloy -made engine block has dished cylinder liners . The cross-flow cylinder head with V-shaped overhanging valves is made of gray cast iron . The engine develops 50 hp (37 kW) at 2200 min -1 and drives, via a four-speed gearbox with gear lever in the vehicle center and a cardan shaft to the rear wheels. The car has two leaf-sprung rigid axles . It was available as a four-seater touring car ( Phaeton ), four-door sedan or as a two-door convertible .
In 1923 the engineer Paul Jaray provided a car with a streamlined body. With the unchanged engine, the car ran at 130 km / h, while the production cars only achieved 95 km / h. The Jaray car remained a one-off. The aerodynamically shaped pontoon body (with smooth sides, without protruding fenders) had little space in the interior, especially in the rear.
