The Auditorium (formerly RHLT Auditorium ) is a house of prayer and office building in Independence , Jackson County , Missouri , United States of America . The auditorium is part of the headquarters of the Communion of Christ , which includes the Independence Temple .

construction

The construction was challenging and showed the vision of then President Frederick M. Smith . Construction began in 1926 and was finalized in 1958. Smith's plans for the building were originally 66% larger. Completion of the building came to a complete halt during the Great Depression . It could not be continued because the church was in debt.

The auditorium has an organ with 113 steps and 6334 flutes. This organ is listed among the 75 largest in the world.

Peace pavilion for children

The children's peace pavilion was built in 1995 in the auditorium. It is used for exhibitions that primarily attract elementary school children from the greater Kansas City area . The Girl Scouts can also earn the Girl Scout of the USA seal by visiting the pavilion .

use

World conferences

World conferences of the Church are held in the great chamber there every three years. There is seating for 6,000 people. The conference chamber is 214 × 168 feet in diameter . The auditorium is 92 feet from floor to ceiling. The outside facade of the auditorium is 114 feet high. It was originally planned to build two balconies. However, only one was built for financial reasons. This was better for the acoustics in the auditorium.

Appearances

The Kansas City Symphony plays the Messiah every year in the auditorium . The International Peace Prize of the Community of Christ is also awarded there annually.

Other events

In addition to church use, the auditorium is also used for graduation ceremonies for high school graduates and other cultural events. Many famous people have spoken in the auditorium. On June 27, 1945, Harry S. Truman announced there that the United States would join the United Nations. Former Secretary of State Colin Powell spoke there on July 24, 1998 to celebrate the anniversary of the elimination of discrimination against blacks in the US military. Environmental activist Jane Goodall spoke in the auditorium in 1999. On July 5, 2007, former United States President Bill Clinton spoke there. He celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Truman Presidential Library .
