Audrey Anne Terras (born Bowdoin ; born September 10, 1942 in Washington, DC ) is an American mathematician who deals with harmonic analysis on symmetrical spaces and graphs, automorphic functions, number theory , geometric analysis (Selberg's trace formula, spectra of Laplace operators ) and quantum chaos busy.

Live and act

Audrey Terras studied at the University of Maryland, College Park (Bachelor 1964), turned to number theory (under the influence of lectures by Sigekatu Kuroda ) and received her doctorate in 1970 from Yale University under Tsuneo Tamagawa ( A generalization of the Epstein zeta function ) after completing her master's degree there in 1966. In 1972 she became an Assistant Professor at the University of California, San Diego , where she is now a professor.

She is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and was on various committees of the American Mathematical Society (AMS), u. a. she was editor of the Transactions of the AMS and was on their council.

After she dealt with harmonic analysis on symmetric spaces and the eigenvalue spectrum of the Laplace operator on various manifolds (with which the trace formula of Atle Selberg and its zeta function is connected, which is also important in investigations into quantum chaos ), she also examined the spectra of operators on finite groups and graphs and the related zeta function of graphs .

In 2008 Audrey Terras was the Noether Lecturer ( Fun with Zetafunctions of Graphs ) and 2000 Falconer Lecturer of the Mathematical Association of America ( Finite Quantum Chaos ). She is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society .
