The Cathedral 'Resurrection of Christ' ( Albanian  Katedralja “Ngjallja e Krishtit” ), also known as the Resurrection Cathedral , is the cathedral of the Eparchy of Korça . The building, built in 1995, is the seat of an Eparchen and belongs to the Orthodox Church of Albania .

Geographical location

The cathedral church is located in the city center of Korça and in the immediate vicinity of the historic city center. The building is bordered on the front by a pedestrian area that connects to the south-east of the Bulevardi Republika . The church was laid out in such a way that it looks in the direction of Bulevardi Shën Gjergji , the boulevard that was named after the previous cathedral , the Saint George's Cathedral (Katedralja e Shën Gjergjit) . Behind the Resurrection Cathedral are old town quarters and - a few streets further - the official seat of the Eparchen, where his offices and his apartment are located.

history

Today's cathedral is a new building. In its place was the St. George's Cathedral since the late 19th century, which was destroyed by the communist state in 1967 as part of Enver Hoxha's anti-religious and atheist policies . The latter had a long square nave and two square church towers , whereas the new building has a round shape.

When the communist dictatorship in Albania was overthrown in 1990 and 1991 and democratic structures were established, the Albanian state also lifted the religious ban that had been in force since 1967. In 1992 the rebuilding of a city cathedral for Korça began immediately. With financial support from Greece - which has always been close to the Albanian Orthodox - the building was inaugurated in 1995.

architecture

The Resurrection Cathedral is a three-aisled Byzantine style church . It stands slightly elevated on a dais and consists mainly of cream-white to ivory-colored stone and red bricks. Typical of this building are the many arcades on the facade, whether the sound arcades on the bell towers or the blind arcades on the three naves. There are also archways on the two side aisles . In recent times, parts of the church facade - especially the blind arcades - have been painted pink.

The white interior is dominated by a large wooden iconostasis .
