Gustav Grossmann (composer)

Gustav Adolf Heinrich Grossmann , also Gustav Adolf Heinrich Großmann , (born November 2, 1890 in Dresden , † December 30, 1959 in Berlin ) was a German Kapellmeister and composer .

Life

Grossmann grew up as the son of master tailor Gustav Grossmann and his wife Martha, nee. Baudisch in Dresden. Here he studied after attending the Teachers' College of Dresden Friedrichstadt at the Conservatory cello with Georg Wille , composition with Felix Draeseke and conducting with Kurt Striegler . Between 1911 and 1919 Grossmann was first solo répétiteur and Kapellmeister at the Saxon State Opera . From 1912 he also directed the opera school at the Conservatory. His further life took him to Erfurt (1919–1924) and Stettin (from 1924) as 1st Opera Kapellmeister , before settling in Berlin. Grossmann worked here from 1939 until his death as Kapellmeister at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden . On February 1, 1943, he was accepted into the NSDAP ( party number 9,582,087). Gustav Grossmann also appeared as a guest conductor of well-known orchestras in Berlin, Cologne , Hamburg , Chemnitz , Gera , Plauen , Dresden , Kaliningrad , Lille (Sweden) and Riga .

His daughter Eva-Maria (* 1922 Stettin, † 2009 Berlin) became a singer (soprano) and married the concert entrepreneur Victor Festl-Hohenfels (* 1897, † 1988).
