A ripper or rear ripper is a tool that is used in earthworks . Technically, it is very similar to the hook plow , an agricultural implement used for tillage , and the term is also used in this context. The tool is also called a ripper tooth , but a distinction must be made between the ripper tooth on the backhoe excavator arm .

Rippers are mainly attached to flat excavators , especially high-traction bulldozers . Because these are attached to the rear of the vehicle, they are known as rear rippers . They can be installed permanently or as an exchangeable attachment . But there are also rippers that are mounted on a separate trailer . The trailer rippers are often one or two axles with a sprung steering axle. However, they are only more suitable than rear rippers in individual cases. As a rule, they are inferior to the rear rippers in hard material, interfere with maneuvering and are more difficult to control in difficult terrain. They also often need additional operating personnel.

Rippers usually have 1 to 10 tines or teeth and are usually hydraulically brought from the transport to the working position. The monodentate embodiment is used for solid material such as rocks and large tear downs, polydentate embodiments for correspondingly lighter material and lower depths and up to 10-tooth designs for Roden of roots .
