The Eyespot Rasbora ( Brevibora dorsiocellata ; formerly Rasbora dorsiocellata ) is a small freshwater fish , which on the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra occurs. Two subspecies have been described, the nominate form B. d. dorsiocellata and B. d. macrophthalma Meinken 1951, called Leuchtaugen-Rasbora in German .

features

The osprey has an elongated, laterally flattened body that reaches a maximum length of 6.5 cm, the subspecies B. d. macrophthalma is only 3.5 cm long. The body is from yellowish-silvery to delicate olive basic color and shimmers slightly grass-green or bluish to purple. The back is gray-brown or brown-olive, the belly silvery, the fins yellowish. The dorsal fin shows a characteristic black spot with a white border. Two dark, more or less distinct longitudinal bands extend along the sides of the body. The sideline is all or almost all of it.

In the subspecies B. d. macrophthalma , the eye is larger, the head shorter and the number of scales in the central longitudinal row less than in the nominate form. The lower half of the eye is iridescent gray-green. The longitudinal ties are barely visible.

Way of life

Ospreys live as schooling fish in flowing and standing waters. They stay close to the surface or in central water zones. They feed on insects that have fallen on the surface of the water, zooplankton, crustaceans and worms.

Systematics

The species was assigned by Duncker in the first description of the collective genus Rasbora . In 2009 Liao, Kullander & Fang established the genus Brevibora for the species . According to Tang et al. (2010) the species is located deep within Rasbora sensu lato .
