Rasbora is a genus of the Bärblings (Rasborinae). The freshwater fish live in South and Southeast Asia.

Rasbora was described in 1859 by the Dutch doctor and naturalist Pieter Bleeker . Generic type is the first in Leuciscus Asked Rasbora cephalotaenia (Bleeker, 1852).

distribution

The distribution area of the genus Rasbora extends from eastern Pakistan to Sumatra , Borneo , Java , Bali , Lombok and Sumbawa , in the north to the southern Philippine islands of Palawan , Busuanga , Culion and southwestern Mindanao . On the Indian subcontinent they occur from the southern foothills of the Himalayas to Sri Lanka , in southern China in Yunnan , Guangdong , Guangxi and Hong Kong .

The focus of biodiversity is the triangle formed by the Malay Peninsula , Sumatra and Borneo. Scientists suspect that the origin of the genus can be found here and that the repeated transgressions and the rise of sea levels during the last ice ages had a significant influence on speciation.

Eleven species that do not form a monophylum live in the greater India area, which is geographically cut off from Southeast Asia by the mountains in Burma ( Gaoligong Shan , Tenasserim Mountains ).

features

Rasbora species are slender, three to eight centimeters long fish. The mouth is terminal or slightly above, the lower jaw often protrudes a little. They don't have barbels . The lateral line organ begins at the upper edge of the gill cover, then runs downwards in an arch and also remains on the tail stalk, as with all danios, below the middle of the body. The scales are relatively large. Your anal fin always has only five, split fin rays , the dorsal fin begins opposite or just behind the pelvic fins . Most Rasbora species are quite plain in color, many have a longitudinal stripe on the sides, a few are reddish or have reddish markings. The latter are popular aquarium fish.

Rasbora species are not schooling fish as such, but live in social groups that live in the middle and upper areas of their home waters. A male and a female each separate briefly for reproduction.
