Augsburg deaconess institution

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Evangelical Diakonissenanstalt Augsburg was founded on October 15, 1855 on the recommendation of Theodor Fliedner , the founder of the Deaconess Institution in Kaiserswerth , as its own parent company. She offered unmarried women career prospects as a deaconess in the service of the Protestant Church. Initially, he worked in nursing the sick and the elderly , caring for children and serving as a community nurse . By 1912, the number of Augsburg deaconesses had grown from a dozen to 312 sisters.

history

In 1886, the estate of Countess Stephanie Guiot du Ponteil created the basis for the construction of a new parent house and the expansion of the work areas, including the establishment of the Augsburg deaconess hospital .

In 1913, the first was Feierabendhaus , a retirement home for the sisters opened. The state recognition of the kindergarten teachers' seminar laid the foundation for the later teacher training . With 589 sisters the number of deaconesses in Augsburg reached its highest level in 1936.

In 1935 the Diakonissenanstalt was the conference venue for the Confessing Church (the premises were made available by the former Rector and Pastor Heinrich Kern, who lived there with his family).

In 1967 a new seminar building was inaugurated, which in 1968 became a “technical school for social pedagogy” and in 1973 the specialist academy for social pedagogy of the Evangelical Diakonissenanstalt Augsburg . In 2005 the specialist academy for social education moved to Hooverstrasse in Augsburg-Kriegshaber .

The Diakonissenanstalt also has a conference center .

With the diaconate as a new training, the Diakonissenanstalt (now "diako") broke new ground in the spiritual qualification of its employees. With this, the institution wants to prepare for the time when there are no more deaconesses in active service. So the last sister who was sent to a church returned to the mother house in 2003.

The Diakonissenanstalt is traditionally headed by a superior and a rector (such as Heinrich Kern from 1925 to 1927). For the first time in the history of the “diako”, the superior is not a deaconess with Pastor Christiane Ludwig. Dr. Jens Colditz has been leading the “diako” since 2019 as rector and chairman of the board.
