The Augustów Plain (Polish Równina Augustowska ) is a mesoregion and lake landscape in the Podlaskie Voivodeship in Poland . The area is around 1,170 km².
location
The Augustów Plain is part of the Lithuanian Lake District ( Suwałki Lake District ). The Lycker Lake District and the Western Suwałki Lake District join in the west, the Eastern Suwałki Lake District in the north and the Biebrza Basin in the south . The Lake District is located in northeastern Poland and borders Belarus and Lithuania .
geology
The Augustów Plain consists of a large number of lakes in a moraine landscape. Characteristic of this landscape are glacial channels between the hills, created by the erosive effect of the meltwater when the glaciers melted , which later took up the lakes. The region is densely forested. In the south there is the Augustów Heath primeval forest .

The largest lake is the Wigry (21.7 km²), which lies in its southern part in the Augustów plain. Other important lakes are:
Rivers
The watershed between the Vistula and the Memel runs through the Augustów Plain . Both river systems are connected by the Augustów Canal . The Augustów Plain drains mainly to the northeast via the Czarna Hańcza into the Memel.
Moraines
The highest moraines in the area are about 190 meters above sea level and are located near Suwałki . The lowest point is at about 120 meters above sea level near Augustów .
colonization
The Augustów plain is sparsely populated. The only town is the spa town of Augustów .
