The August-Bebel-Street is a residential and road in the district Bielefeld-Mitte the East Westphalian city of Bielefeld . It runs around 300 m east of the old town, mainly in a north-south direction. It is named after the social democrat August Bebel (1840–1913).

history

From 1855 onwards, numerous industrial companies emerged east of the then city, including the largest ones, the Ravensberger Spinnerei (1857) and the Dürkoppwerke (1867). In order to accommodate the many working-class families who moved in, numerous residential buildings were built, especially from 1870 onwards. Before 1879, construction began on what was then Kaiserstraße , which was to open up the new residential areas and connect them with the factories running in a north-south direction. 1880–1883 the Protestant Pauluskirche was built in the neo-Gothic style, as the first new church outside the old town. In 1884 Bielefeld's first gymnasium was built near Kesselbrink. In 1891 the district building for the Bielefeld district was built on the corner of Kesselbrink . In 1900, the Schäffer & Vogel laundry factory was built north of St. Paul's Church and the Göricke bicycle factory to the east. In 1908 the Catholic Church of St. Joseph (Bielefeld) was opened in Art Nouveau style at the north end of the street . In October 1933, the city council renamed Kaiserstrasse to Horst-Wessel-Strasse . A memorial plaque was placed on the house where Nazi hero Horst Wessel was born , house number 37. In 1944 the district building and most of the houses north of Brandenburger Strasse were destroyed by bombs. In 1945 the city council decided to rename the former Horst-Wessel-Straße to August-Bebel-Straße . The former Goebenstrasse , which was connected to the south, was also beaten to August-Bebel-Strasse. In 1954 a new building was built south of the old district building, today's Technical Town Hall . Around 1955 an indoor swimming pool was built on the east side of the Kesselbrink (demolished in 1999). In 1960 an underground car park was built on the Kesselbrink, at that time one of the largest in Germany. At the same time, a new police headquarters building was built on the other side of the street, next to the indoor swimming pool. In 1980 activists of the solidarity movement set up a third world house with a third world shop in the corner house No. 62 (Paulusstraße), which was then threatened with demolition , today's Welthaus Bielefeld . In September 2008, the environmental groups based in the Bielefeld Environment Center organized a car-free day of action in the northern part of the street. In 2013, a large bike and skate park was set up on the redesigned Kesselbrink, directly on August-Bebel-Straße .

course

The August-Bebel-Strasse begins in the north on Herford Strasse and from there leads almost 2 km straight to the south. Its northern part runs through the Ostmann tower district . It touches the Kesselbrink to the east. At the corner of Oelmühlenstraße it bends slightly to the southwest and ends after approx. 500 m at Detmolder Straße ( Bundesstraße 66 ). This section of the road, which was called Goebenstraße until 1945 , leads at right angles to the Teutoburg Forest and has a steep gradient.
