In 1769 he was accepted into the Mecklenburg-Schwerin court chapel with his father and brother . In the same year the court orchestra moved to Ludwigslust . While the father was first violinist, the two brothers played second violin. Like other family members, he had a talent and education in painting. He made portraits of some court orchestra members and miniature portraits of the ducal family.
He had been married to Johanna Sophia Fridrica, born 19 years his junior, since 1793. Hein (t) z (1770-1824). In 1807 the couple had seven children. The couple's two sons, Friedrich Ludwig Abel and Johann Leopold Abel (1795–1871) received violin and piano lessons from their father from early childhood. He went with both of them on a financially unsuccessful concert tour through northern Germany. In 1821 he was retired.
