Leopold August Abel , pseudonym : LEBA (born March 24, 1718 in Koethen , † August 25, 1794 in Ludwigslust ) was a German violinist, composer and painter.

Life

Leopold August Abel came from a family of artists and was the eldest son of the famous viol virtuoso Christian Ferdinand Abel , who was the "Premier Musicus" in Johann Sebastian Bach's court orchestra in Köthen . The painters Ernst August Abel and Ernst Heinrich Abel as well as the viol player Carl Friedrich Abel were his brothers.

He was a student of his father and in 1735 of Georg Benda in Dresden. In 1745 he became concertmaster in the Braunschweig court orchestra. From 1757 to 1765 he was concertmaster in the orchestra of the Prince of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen and in 1766 in Berlin in the chapel of the Margrave of Brandenburg-Schwedt . From 1769 until his death he was first violinist of the Mecklenburg-Schwerin court orchestra in Ludwigslust.

He was the teacher of his sons Wilhelm Anton Christian Carl Abel (Abelgaard) (1749–1795), August Christian Andreas Abel and Friedrich Ludwig Aemilius Abel (1770–1842).

A self-portrait, a portrait of Antonio Rosetti and a gouache depiction of the Ludwigslust court chapel (1770) have been preserved on the pictures he painted .
